July’s Website of the Month: The Week Speed Reads

The Week Speed Reads

First things first…yes there hasn’t been an WotM update since…January!?
So I guess it’s about time to introduce another website! 😉
July’s website of the month is…

The Week: Speed Reads

Speed Reads is one of the sections of The Week, a digital newspaper. It covers a wide range of subjects, but as the name suggests, there are no loooooooooong articles.
Speed Reads are useful for learners and ESL / EFL teachers alike.

Teachers could use the short articles as class reading materials, supplemented with activities and comprehension questions. Also, the articles could be used as a basis for conversation classes.
Learners, on the other hand, could also read the articles outside of lesson time as a source of additional reading materials and to learn new vocabulary.
Since the articles are rather short, it’s quite easy to follow the topics, even though you might not be able to understand every single word.

Leaners could try different reading methods like scanning or skimming.
When scanning a text, you move your eyes quickly over the text to locate the information you are looking for. Skimming a text is speed reading, which allows you to quickly identify the gist of a passage or text, in order to identify the key topic or main idea of the article.

It’s much more motivating to do any of these activities with short articles, as you will not lose focus so quickly.

Speed Reads cover a wide range of topics, so there is probably something for everyone!
If you’re not sure where to start, maybe have a look at the Most Popular Speed Reads section, which is located on the right hand side of the website.
