January’s website of the month is…
The website is a mixture of dictionary, thesaurus and word study tool all in one place. Plus it translates words in 6 languages, finds words that rhyme and you can even listen to words, to find out how they are pronounced!
Additionally you could use word hippo as a crossword solver, for example by choosing the Words starting / ending with… or the Words containing… option.
Also quite useful is the Word forms option, which allows you to look for different word forms like plural, singular, a few tenses, adjectives, adverbs etc.:
It’s quite nice to have all these features in one place, but as usual, you should be careful how to use the words suggested by the website, as in English, context is very important, a simple change of context might change the meaning of the word! Word hippo does provide some help here as well though, through the Sentences with the word / Example sentences option:
A word of caution: A quick online search for one of the example sentences revealed that word hippo does not create its own example sentences but rather takes them from various sources around the net. Which means that the language used in the example sentences is authentic, but might not always be a 100 percent accurate!
Word hippo is a very easy to use website for interested language learners, who want to find out more about a particular word, as well as native speakers who are interested in their own language and simple translations (it only translates one word at a time, not whole sentences!) without having to consult different websites.
